We Are Breaking
The Cycle of Poverty
Board members Shirley Anderson and Ruth Fraser describe why the Academy is so unique and how it empowers young people to grow and flourish in all aspects of their lives.
Learn how we are lifting the children of Nairobi, Kenya out of poverty and helping them build a better future for themselves and their community.
The Nadine Griffey Academy of Kenya is a California non-profit which will sponsor and fund the costs for impoverished orphans in Nairobi or other rural villages of Kenya, to attend private boarding schools and to become leaders in Kenyan society. As a Kenya registered non-profit, the Academy is a separate legal entity under Kenyan law. The Nadine Griffey Academy of Kenya was founded to provide a unique educational opportunity for children from the slum areas of Nairobi, Kenya. The fundamental guidelines of the Academy explain why we call it “unique”:
- The children will be treated as part of the Nadine Griffey Academy “family” in a way that they will meet and know each other.
- The Academy will select orphaned children who have demonstrated a desire and determination to learn during their early primary school years.
- The Academy will sponsor the orphans and take them from grade four or five to the end of secondary school and perhaps beyond to a university.
- The children selected will be both boys and girls.
- A priority will be to enable the children to become fluent in both English and Swahili.
- An effort will be made to select children from different tribal backgrounds to promote camaraderie and cooperation.
- The ultimate goal is to foster a desire to learn and become future leaders in Kenya.
Although there will be a Christian component to the program, children of all faiths will be welcomed.
